Proteins and Molecular Mechanisms (BCH455/BCH555) - this course is an introduction to protein structure and function for senior undergraduates or beginning graduate students.

Enzy me Kinetics and Mechanisms ( BCH590E ) - this is a graduate elective developed in conjunction with Mike Goshe in the Department of Biochemistry. I teach enzyme kinetics including steady state and pre-steady kinetics, transition state theory, inhibition and reaction mechanisms. Dr. Goshe teaches the molecular mechanisms section.

NSF Career Award educational initiative: Promoting inquiry-based teaching in secondary school classrooms - This project will promote inquiry-based teaching by engaging Masters education students from the Department of Mathematics, Science & Technology Education in laboratory research.

New biology research course for Masters Education students: A new series of classes designed to teach laboratory skills and scientific concepts will be offered starting the summer of 2008. These classes will promote inquiry-based teaching in high schools by involving Education students in authentic laboratory research. The project consists of three parts: 1) A summer course to introduce molecular biology techniques to Masters Education students, and explain the motivation for our research proposal. 2) During the school year, students from the summer course will participate in the research project in my lab by generating surface mutations in one of the transcription factors we are studying. A graduate student will test the activity of the mutations and provide the information for the teachers to interpret. 3) The following summer the teachers will evaluate their experience and develop ways to translate what they have learned into inquiry-based teaching approaches in their own classrooms.

This education project is being funded through a National Science Foundation Career Award with the support of the College of Agriculture and Life Science's Dean's office and the NCSU STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education) initiative. The project is in collaboration with Dr. Penick , the head of the Department of Mathematics, Science & Technology Education at NCSU. It will provide a model for developing collaborations between the basic sciences, the Department of Science Education, and teachers.
